Back in 1988 David Mazurek bought a farm in Edmore, Michigan. While on a tour of the property he noticed a rather strange looking rock that had been used to hold open a barn door and mentioned it to the farmer. The man ended up telling him the story behind the rock and it turned out to be far more fascinating than anyone could ever imagine a rock story could be!
The old farmer told him that in the 1930’s a meteorite had crashed to Earth right there on his property. It was incredibly noisy and when the farmer and his father went out the following morning, they found a large crater in the ground. They ended up digging the 22 pound rock out of the center of the hole and he even claimed that it was still warm to the touch.
After purchasing the farm from the old man, David kept the rock and used it to prop open the barn door for years. When he moved yet again, he ended up taking the rock with him and continued to use it as a doorstop at his new place. There was one time that he brought it to his children’s school to use it for show-and-tell, but other than that, the stone sat by the door for years.
In 2018 a meteor shower over Michigan led to people all over the state finding meteorites on their own properties. Many people sold them as specimens and made quite a lot of money doing so. When David heard about all of this, he wondered what his meteorite was worth, or if it was even real. He reached out to a geologist friend who told him to go to Dr. Mona Sirbescu, a geology professor at Central Michigan University. She agreed to take a look at the stone but thought that it was probably just another plain old rock. Over the last 18 years people have asked her to examine rocks that they think are meteorites all the time, and every time the answer has been no.
However, when David brought his strange looking rock in to Dr. Sirbescu’s office she knew right away that this one was different. The rock looked like a meteorite, it was heavy and metallic, and when she tested it, she determined that it was made up of 88.5% iron and 11.5% nickel. Additional testing done by the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC verified her results and now they knew it was indeed a meteorite.
According to Dr. Sirbescu, the 22 pound meteorite is the sixth largest ever found in Michigan and worth around $100,000. David can sell it to a private collector or to a museum for display, and several museums have already expressed interest. For the time being, he has allowed Dr. Sirbescu to use it in her classes and her students had the unique opportunity that many geologists will never experience, they get to hold a meteorite in their hands.
If that doesn’t sound exciting, then perhaps what Dr. Sirbescu said about it will put it into perspective “Just think, what I was holding is a piece of the early solar system that literally fell into our hands.” Not too bad for an old rock that was used as a doorstop for who knows how many years!

If you’ve ever had to deal with government bureaucracy and all the red tape that goes along with it, then you know how long and frustrating it can be to get anything done. It seems like even the simplest of problems can take months, usually even years, to get fixed. By the time that happens, most people have already found ways around whatever the issue may be or gone ahead and tried to fix it themselves.
It’s not just an American or first world problem, even the remotest of places in the middle of Africa are stuck dealing with government ineptitude. For the small village of Kaganda, located two hours north of Nairobi, Kenya, residents had been asking the local government to build a road for years, yet they never seemed to get anywhere. A date had previously been set to begin construction but that was over 5 years ago, so they began to lose hope of ever getting the road built.
The villagers badly needed this particular road built because there was only one paved road in town and a couple of dirt ones. The one road that brings them to the closest market and church in the area isn’t a direct route, instead they have to travel 2.5 miles out of the way to get there. Then they must walk that extra 2.5 miles with all their groceries on the way back. Despite their constant pleas for a new direct route to the market, the government could not get the ball rolling and they remained majorly inconvenienced for years.
For a while the villagers used a shortcut through the bush, but they were cutting across private property. The property owner eventually put a fence up, effectively blocking the shortcut, and so they went back to taking the long way. At that point, a local 45 year old man named Nicholas Muchami decided to get the job done the old fashioned way. He was sick of waiting for a road that might not ever get built and so he set to work digging it himself.
Using just the farm tools he had, he worked to clear the land. He cut down trees and bushes, pulled up roots, and dug out a path for the road that would lead directly from the village to the market area. Nicholas worked tirelessly from 7am to 5pm no matter what the weather was or how hot it got. In just six days he had managed to clear 1.5km and had made a dirt road wide enough for cars to drive on and the villagers were thrilled.
Eventually Nicholas had to take a break from his volunteer work. He normally worked odd jobs to make money and since he wasn’t getting paid, he needed to get back to work to provide for his family. He also needed to rest, and when he did a few other villagers picked up where he’d left off to help finish the road.
News of the road and how it was built soon spread and major news outlets like the BBC sent camera crews to get pictures of it. When the story went global people started sending Nicholas gifts, food, and money to help support and show how much they appreciated what he was doing. Their kind gifts enabled him to focus and work only on the road, which he soon completed.
In the end, Nicholas had dug just under three miles almost all by himself. When asked what motivated him, he said that he did it for the women and children in the village and to save everyone time. Now trips to the market or church are drastically shorter and the elderly, sick, and disabled can take a car there in just minutes. All this is possible because one man decided to do the work himself rather than wait for the government who had been promising it for years.

School is supposed to be a safe place and environment for kids to learn and get a great education. It is also a place for kids to learn how to be social, make friends, learn how to interact with adults and slowly but surely become self-sustaining adults that can survive in the ‘real world’. The problem is a lot of time, this education comes with a price that many kids aren’t prepared for.
Bullying has been around for a very long time and even as many schools attempt to stop this epidemic it still shows up almost everywhere. In almost every school there are always certain kids who get picked on and certain kids who tend to be the bullies. Many have just accepted this as ‘the way it is’ or a ‘right of passage’ but sometimes the victims of bullying never fully recover and carry this pain in fear from school into adulthood.
This brings us to today’s story about a mother named Samantha Flemming and her daughter Melissa Flemming. Melissa was born with a rare condition called Microcephaly which caused her head to be smaller at birth than it should be and her brain development in turn develops slower than the other children. When the school year had begun Melissa had really long hair but her hair was strangely getting subtly shorter as the months progressed.
One morning mom made her little girl breakfast and sent her off to school like any other day, nothing was too out of the ordinary. When her daughter got back from school at the end of the day Mom had noticed that her daughters hair had gotten a lot shorter than when she left the house earlier that day. This was the most drastic it had ever been and Samantha had realized something was truly wrong.
At first she thought maybe her daughter was just cutting her own hair experimentally or maybe she and a friend were giving each other makeovers and cut each other’s hair and this time the friend just went a little overboard with the clippers. However the truth would be so much worse than she initially imagined.
Because of Melissa’s disorder she had a lot of trouble speaking and being able to vocalize how she felt and what she had been going through. Her mom began to fire questions at her because she was becoming very concerned at this hair shortening situation. Finally it became clear from Melissa’s description that a group of ‘mean girls’ at school had been making fun of her and cutting clumps of her hair out for the past few months.

Dana and Matt had been together since high school. They were a beautiful couple and they loved each other very much. They were very religious and wanted to share that aspect of their lives with their daughter Luella, who they were raising in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They were intent on giving her the best childhood possible.
One day, Dana and Matt left Luella with a sitter. They went to a worship concert and conference. At the conference, Dana met a missionary who told her a heartbreaking story. This story would go on to move her immensely.
He had done a lot of work in Ugandan orphanages. He spoke about one specific orphanage that was different than the rest. The inside was a large room with around a hundred babies each in his or her own crib. When the missionary walked inside, he expected the room to be raucous and loud. Instead, it was silent. The missionary told her that the babies didn’t cry because no one came for them when they did cry. Eventually, the babies each realized that crying wouldn’t do anything and stopped.
Dana couldn’t believe what she was hearing. How tragic that so many children gave up on the idea of someone coming for them so early in their lives. Dana vowed that she would never allow her own daughter to feel this way. When she got home, she heard Luella crying. She climbed into the crib and laid beside Luella until the young child went to sleep. Dana is one of many noble mothers to dedicate her time and self to her child. Hopefully someday, every child will have a mother as committed and loving as Dana.

In today’s featured story we will be covering a beautiful story about adopting homeless and abandoned kittens. The story begins with a man named Jared and his girlfriend Katt who decided that they were going to adopt a kitten from a shelter who was in desperate need of a loving furever home. That morning Jared got in his car followed the navigation and made his way to the local SPCA. He parked his car, he got out, entered the shelter and headed towards the cat adoption area.
He walked around trying to feel out which cat gave off the perfect energy to match their personalities. For anyone who has ever adopted an animal they know the part where you are at the shelter looking for “the one” can be very emotional. Not only are you about to add a new family member to your life that will be with you for the next decade or two; but you also have to walk past the other animals that you are not adopting and this can be heart wrenching experience. With that being said Jared ended up making eye contact with a small grey kitten and in that exact moment Jared knew this little guy was “the one”!
He told the SPCA that he had to head to work but to hold this kitten and he and his girlfriend would be back later that day. He also explained to the people at SPCA that he wanted to make this kitten adoption “special”. What did he mean by special? Well no spoilers yet…
He came up with ingenious plan with the staff at the SPCA and told them that later that day he and his girlfriend would come get the kitten but they would be arriving separately… The plan was set, an adorable abandoned kitty was going to get a forever home and there would be one final touch to put the cherry on top of this wonderful day…..

All that it takes is one quick glance at someone for us to form an overall impression as to who they are. We take in what they are wearing, how they style their hair, and pay special attention to their physical characteristics. These things can all reveal a little insight into what their personalities may be like and that’s why they say you never get a second chance to make a first impression!
The practice of judging people based on appearance has existed for as long as mankind has. There are a number of different tests and theories concerning physical traits linked to personality types and many of them focus primarily on body parts, like the hands, feet, and head. One well known example you’ve likely heard of is phrenology, which centers on analyzing character traits based off of skull measurements. While modern thought and practice has moved well beyond phrenology, back in the early 1800s an entire area of study was dedicated to the discipline.
In this day and age the most recent related trend has to do with the hands and the primary focus is on nail shapes. Known commonly as ‘nail personality diagnosis’ the concept originated in Japan and it has recently caught on in the West. The idea is that the shape of a person’s nails can be used to analyze and predict various personality traits.
While some people may be skeptical about these types of things, it best to try and keep an open mind about it. At the very least it’s an interesting take on personality and the general ideas that nail personality diagnosis embodies could actually be onto something. It may be a stretch, but in a semi-related study published in the Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry, researchers found that people who bite their nails tend to be perfectionists. When things get stressful or are out of their control it makes then feel tense and they take that frustration out on their nails. Most of the time they aren’t even aware they’re biting their nails, it’s like a subconscious reaction they have. So if you are a nail-biter, it may be due to the fact that you’re a perfectionist!
All that aside, take a moment to do a quick self-evaluation and look down at your nails. Simply match up the shape and size they are with the corresponding picture and then read what it has to say about your personality.
