The ivory trade is one of the world’s oldest, cruelest, and most inhumane types of trade. Every year thousands of animals are killed for their ivory tusks, with elephants being slaughtered at alarming rates and suffering the most from it. Poachers have decimated herds and wild elephant numbers are steadily declining.
One woman, Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick, saw this happening in her own back yard. Along with her husband she was the co-warden of the Tsavo National Park in Kenya and when he passed away in 1977, she started the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT). Her goal was to help rescue and save as many orphaned elephants as she possibly could, and she succeeded, today it’s the most successful orphan rehabilitation program on the planet.
Orphaned baby elephants are notoriously hard to care for. To survive they require constant, specialized care and a certain type of milk formula that contains coconut oil, which Daphne found only after trying every possible milk source she could get her hands on. When she did finally find the proper type of milk that the elephants, and rhinos, could tolerate and thrive off of, it was the breakthrough she’d been looking for and made her work possible.
When a newly orphaned baby elephant arrives at the sanctuary they are under deep emotional and physical distress. Some are injured and all are scarred after seeing their mothers and possibly other family members slaughtered by poachers for nothing more than their ivory tusks. They are not caged or penned in, instead they’re allowed to roam freely.
Each one is assigned their own handler who is like a surrogate mother, they take care of any and all needs the baby elephant might have. They feed them, watch their health closely, play, and snuggle together. All of this is done with the goal of returning the elephant back into the wild, healthy and ready for the life it deserves.
Daphne was a leading voice in the fight against poaching and ending the ivory trade. She saw firsthand the devastating effects it had on not only the elephants, but also the rhinos who are now facing extinction. Her foundation has helped hundreds of elephants survive and return to the wild.
The saying “an elephant never forgets” is true in Daphne’s case because they never forgot her. Over the years many came back to visit and bring their families to see her. They would line up to hug her and show their appreciation, and that alone made it all worth it to her.

The unspoken bond that can form between elephant and man is on full display in this wonderful video clip. It features an elephant named Thongsri who lives with her caretaker over in Thailand. There’s no question of whether or not she cares deeply for her handler because when she noticed that he was being ‘attacked’ by another man she immediately rushed right on over to defend him.
It doesn’t matter whether or not her caretaker and the other man were play fighting, all that Thongsri saw was someone potentially hurting her friend. In that moment all she wanted to do was scare off the attacker, stand by her friend’s side, and make sure that he was okay.
As soon as he saw Thongsri coming at him the other man ran off, who wouldn’t have? Seeing a massive elephant flaring her ears aggressively and standing guard over her handler while he’s crawling around on the ground is a wild sight to see!
No one in their right mind would continue to try and harm him, they’d likely get trampled in half a second if they did! It all goes to show just how amazing, sensitive, and special elephants truly are.

Many people know that an elephant never forgets, thanks to their incredible memories, but they are capable of so much more.
They cry, play, laugh, are self-aware, and express a wide range of feelings and emotions from grief to compassion and beyond. There are a number of fascinating videos clips out there featuring elephants doing all sorts of amazing and unbelievable things. They have been captured playing pianos, saving other animals and people, and now there’s even video evidence of them recycling garbage.
A surveillance camera recently caught one wild elephant doing a little tidying up around the Thornhill Safari Lodge in Limpopo, South Africa. The lodge is located at Kruger National Park, which is home to countless animals, including thousands of wild African elephants.
The elephants are free to roam and the one seen here was munching on some tasty tree leaves when he happened to spot a few pieces of litter scattered on the ground near a trash can. He ambled on over and did what any good person would do, he picked it up and disposed of it properly.
That’s no easy feat for a massive animal that weighs thousands of pounds and has no hands. However, he does have a trunk which is just as effective at picking things up. With a little maneuvering and some help from his feet, he was able to grasp the trash and place it in the bin.
He’s definitely seen people throw out trash before and use the bins, which is why he knew exactly what to do with the litter. He remembered what he’d observed before, learned how to recycle, and did it on his own volition. It speaks volumes when an elephant has to pick up after man.
Too bad some people have never learned to do the same because the world would be a much cleaner, and safer, place for us all.

An Elephant Notices His Human Fall On His Face In Pain. How She Reacts The UNTHINKABLE!

Many people know that an elephant never forgets, thanks to their incredible memories, but they are capable of so much more.
They cry, play, laugh, are self-aware, and express grief and compassion. When another elephant in the group passes away they all mourn the loss. They have also been observed grieving when a close human friend or caretaker dies, as was the case when Laurence Anthony passed in 2012.
Anthony was known as the “elephant whisperer” for his amazing ability at calming and reforming violent, traumatized elephants who were seen as pests in South Africa. By taking an interest in, and living among them while rehabilitating, the out of control animals, he saved their lives from certain death.
Shortly after he died, two separate and distinct herds of elephants made a miles long, 12 hour, non-stop journey to his home. They showed up and stayed for two days to pay their final respects to the man who had loved and saved them before heading back into the bush. Somehow, in their hearts or minds, they had sensed the loss of friend and wanted to say goodbye to him.

Baby Elephant Is Trapped And Begging Mom For Help. But Wait Til’ You See Who Actually Rescues Him!

Get ready to watch one of the sweetest, most precious moments captured on video. A herd of elephants were trekking along when a little baby elephant gets stuck in a muddy waterhole. Some people who were on a Wild Wings Safari, came upon the scene, while sightseeing.
This tiny little elephant is trying to pull himself out of the mud hole, but his little legs aren’t long enough and he doesn’t have the strength to get out on his own. The mother elephant is trying to figure out how to help him by using her trunk. She can’t seem to get a grip, so she gets into the hole for better leverage. Still no luck!! It’s just too slippery.
Then the baby cleverly walks over to a slightly drier edge of the waterhole, tries doing it himself again, but he still needs mama’s help. She then gets another adult to lend his trunk to oust the youngster. Finally SUCCESS!! Such great problem solving for mom and babe alike! Watch what happens after he gets out, still wobbly on those adorable little legs.

Tiny Baby Elephant Notices People Watching Him On Safari. But Seconds Later He Does The Most Adorable Thing Ever.
When on safari, expect the unexpected. There’s absolutely no way you can ever know what you’re going to come across which is all part of what makes the experience so awesome and exciting. Venturing out into the wild where some of the planet’s largest, most fierce animals roam freely is simply guaranteed to be action packed and filled with one thrilling adventure after another.
Of course, sometimes the most memorable thing that you end up witnessing on a once in a lifetime safari vacation isn’t necessarily going to be a pack of lions taking down a Wildebeest. Nature works in mysterious ways and as the tourists in this video found out, those ways can be quite adorable and endearing!
The group had stopped on a dusty beaten path near a watering hole to allow a family of elephants to pass. The larger mother was leading in front and trailing closely behind her were two smaller elephants. The smallest one of the bunch was just a baby and as the people in the group fawned over how adorable the calf was he turned and looked right at them. The glance was the perfect photo opportunity, but it only lasted a few seconds before the little guy suddenly seized up and let out a big sneeze! The force rocked his body and caused him to let out a mini-trumpeting noise that sounds absolutely adorable.
Just as cute as the actual sneeze was the baby elephants reaction to it. While the noise he made caused everyone else to laugh and giggle in delight, it ended up spooking the poor baby! He took off running, his little feet moving double time to help him skedaddle on over to his mama, where he proceeded to hide behind her massive frame. You just have to see and hear this baby elephant sneeze, it’s nature in its most lovable and comical state!
