There are endless things to see and do when road tripping and exploring a new country. There are new foods to taste, shops and towns to visit, vistas to take in, and cows to entertain. Wait, what? That last thing may seem a little strange but it’s exactly what one group of musicians touring France decided to do.
The New Hot 5, an American New Orleans-style ensemble jazz band that specializes in the music of legends such as Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton, were driving through the Alps in Autrans, France.
After spotting a couple of cows grazing in a field on the side of the road, they decided to pull over and play a few tunes for the small herd. The group got out, stretched their legs, and then picked up their instruments for a little impromptu practice.
As soon as the first few notes hit the cow’s ears they perked right up and paid careful attention to the strange new people who were gathered at the fence. The band started off slowly at first with just the tuba and a triangle chiming lightly.
They didn’t want to alarm the cows or scare them, but rather ease them into the music so they would enjoy it more. That seemed to do the trick because almost immediately the herd started to move towards the strange new people and sounds.
By the time the band members began playing “When the Saints Go Marching In” the cows were completely absorbed in the new entertainment. The stood in a line watching the band play and truly seemed to enjoy the music. The whole scene is just plain awesome and great to see, everyone is happy and having a good time, cows and people alike.
